Right, I only want to build this thing once so I'll ask the question here.

I'm putting together a saw bench for an SCMS which is also going to provide a lot of storage underneath, and behind the fence there will be drawer units. I'm sure at times it will get abused as a general work surface as most things in my workshop are!

You can see a pic of the first couple of carcasses put together. It will be clad in 12mm ply, with an 18mm MR MDF top surface. The carcasses are 2"x4".

So, two questions...

1) Mounting the drawer runners for underneath. Given that I will put some heavy loads in some drawers, behind the ply I will add some vertical 2x4 to provide fixing material. Any issues with that?

2) The open spans in the top are too wide (80cm) for me to be comfy in the rigidity and support of the MDF, so I will be putting horizontal supports in there. I have one of two ways to do this, and I'm hoping my first choice will do...
...which is to just put in some left-to-right horizontal supports of 1x4" fixed into the 2x4" framing with pocket screws.
OR I could cut notches into the 2x4" and house the end of those horizontal supports into them.

I'd like to think pocket screws are adequate (it's what I'm using for the overall frame after all!), but is there any reason with these being in the middle of a beam rather than next to one of the corner verticals that I would have to actually joint them?

Cheers.
