Notice this on ebay, struck a chord and set me wondering... as far as I am aware Record never made a A83 spokeshave ... or have I got my facts wrong?

I suggest it's probably a misreading of a blurred mark and is actually an A63.

I've just looked at it with as large a zoomed image as I get on my 30" monitor and it does seem to be an eight not a six.
But as Andy says there's no No.A 83 listed by Record. Odd.

For someone who seems to spend their lives rubbing rust off old tools at bootfairs with their thumb suitably wetted to try to decipher a maker's name through centuries of oxidation...I can honestly say I am fairly good at making out names and numbers and that is definitely an "8".

If it were a "6"...it wouldn't have a clear indent on the lefthand edge.

Being a peaceable kind of soul, I agree with everybody.

The tool is a Record #63.

The number on the cap is an '8'.

:D

I think it's an extremely rare tool and therefore valuable ... probably worth as much as £10.75!!!

It looks like "A83" to me too.

I can imagine it now - tradesman patternmaker to apprentice patternmaker "Can't you read lad? It was a bleeedin "6", not a bleedin "8" I wrote down for you. Now they've gone and cast 5000 of the damn things. If Mr Hampton finds out it'll be coming out of your wages for the next three years."

Cheers, Vann.

Effectively seems "N°A83".

But "NECORO", not Record
