Recommended stains?

SWMBO has decided that the boys bed needs to be stained to match some new furniture she bought at the weekend!

So I need recommendations on what to use! Having never stained anything before I'm at a loss. I know I'll need to take it back to bare wood (presumably?) but then which brand is good? Any what would you recommend as a topcoat?

I like and have always used Rustins.
Good range of colours that can be mixed with eachother to alter shades or make new/different colours..
