I was recently given an old bed headboard and footboard(?) which I was told is at least 90 years old. They both had a walnut(?) veneered face and a sapele veneered back. When I cut the moulding off the edge, I found that the footboard had been made of a single plank of sapele 620mm wide x 20mm thick. It has slight widthways cupping, but is usable. They don't make wood like that any more.
Strangely, the bookmatch of the headboard veneers were way off centre.
