Hi,

i have a teak set of tables and chars, and all another set of benches to re finish. Is there another method to removing the grey other than lots of time and a power sander to remove they greyed wood.

Also i know teak oil isn't the most durable Finish, is there anything that will give a similar look but more durable?

Many thanks

Tom

To remove the grey you might try the power washer! It sounds mad I know but apparently the results can be quite spectacular.

If you want to use something other than a Teak oil for the refinish these days one of the new wax/oil finishes would probably be the main recommendation. You could also try an old standby, linseed oil (raw, not BLO) if you don't mind that you must do regular recoats to maintain the look.

What's wrong with that fabulous silvery grey look? I detest oil finishes with a vengeance. Made the mistake of using some worktop oil to seal an oak floor in a bathroom. That was three months ago and when I go in there, the stench (from the oil!) is stomach-churning.

Well I certainly find the silvery grey attractive Roger, but it's not to everyone's taste. And it is the start of decay. Keeping up some sort of finishing regime, even if only spottily, can greatly lengthen the life of hardwood furniture outdoors.

As for your floor, I'd think about soaking the oil out with plenty of white spirit and clean rags or kitchen paper. The smell will be a lot worse before it's better but that oil smell will linger for months and months if you don't do something.
