I have a wall switch for a water timer. I want to buy the extension back box that allows me to fit another switch next to the timer without having to knock the wall about. Its like a surface box but it clips behind the existing face plate.
I've had one for many years but now cant find what they are called and a search isnt giving me precisely what I want.
Name that item please.

thats very nearly it. Dont suppose theres a 30 mm deep version?
I try surfing thanks

Nope, still not quite there. To explain a little more...
Theres a flush mounted water heater switch in the upstairs hallway (just like a light switch), but I want to put a timer next to it.
Many years ago I bought a really perfect unit called a ranger, where you undid the existing switch, and a plate fitted behind it and extended sideways to take the digital timer. Truly magic thing, looked absolutely custom made. So what happens? They stop making it!!!!

So now I have to buy a timer and a box to go alongside the switch and I really dont want any extra plastering. But the timers I can find now need a 30 mm box. So even that 28 mm is going to squeeze everything too much.

I would replace the switch with a Fused spur time switch, search for Timeguard FST11 24 HR fused spur time switch or a Greenbrook T205-C 7 Day Combined timer & fused spur, for example.

That timeguard looks a possible, but at 45 quid its a bit on the top end of the budget. I'll see if I can get a better price thanks.

Or you can just fit a box over as in the links posted by sawdustsam and stevef.

Easy enough to do, just drill two holes in the back of the box and screw to the original backbox with the original brass screws, though I'd probably put a washer on the screws to spread the load. The surface box would sit approx centrally over the old one.

lots of options, but I'm fitting this as a favour to someone who saw mine and thought it was so neat. Now of course, I cant find the one I used, and all this stuff is getting bulkier and sticking further out from the wall.

this is why I dont want to start knocking the wall about or getting too involved.
I shall have to go back to her and explain it wont be as simple or slim as the one I have before I start ordering stuff.

How deep are you wanting, 29mm any good ?

The timers I can find are 30 mm, but they seem to stick out another 30 mm or so. thats why I'm wishing I hadnt offered to fit this for her. Mine is only 25 mm from the wall surface.
I'm trying to back pedal now.
