Hello there people,

I'm in the middle of a small project, and have hit a little snag now I am nearing completion of the Balsa prototype. I find myself in need of buying some Mahogany, or perhaps some other wood, in planks or sheets of 5mm thickness, and, crucially, 140mm+ width, and 200mm+ length. That width has so far been a major obstacle in all online stores I can find with a quick Google.

Does anyone have an idea as to where I can go to buy wood in these dimensions?

If you were closer to me then i would offer to machine some up for you from some offcuts :)

I could still do it for you and post them if you are interested. Im not sure what you are looking to spend but I am sure we can come to an arrangement!

I would think the easiest approach would be to ring or email one of the large hardwood merchants (who will have their own machining facilities) and get them to re-saw and plane the material out of stock for you, it's not quite as convenient as just ordering online but it isn't much less convenient.

It's about an hour and a half from Cambridge, but Sykes in Atherstone could probably prepare that for you.

I would look on ebay. There are always sellers selling the sort of size timber you require.

Welcome to the forum!

I know you've specified you need 5mm thick timber and in Mahogany. The link I'm suggesting doesn't do either  However, they start from 7mm thick and go upto 219mm widths, supplied in many timbers including Meranti & Sapele, which are fairly similar to Mahogany, at possibly a cheaper price.

Quick price check for you:
Meranti 2.4m 7x219mm £30.16
Sapele 2.4m 7x219mm £28.78

The website is http://www.timbercut4u.co.uk/
Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the help so far, and that link in the last reply could be useful. If it comes to it, I guess I can bump the thickness to 7mm if it makes things easier. As for Mahogany, being a total novice just starting out, it was the only *Fancy* wood I really knew about :) Looking around more, I have found several other woods which look interesting, and I'd love to find a use for some Ebony or Burr Walnut in this thing. Also I found a place which sells something called Ironwood, which looks... Stunning really, though unfortunately not in the amounts I need...

I'm still finishing the prototype, then I need to get back to Cambridge where all the tools are before I get on with the real woods. Any more links or suggestions are most welcome, and thanks for all the help and offers so far!
