Bit short notice, I know, but they are having a timber auction tomorrow together with some collectable tools and some not-so collectable !

Catalogue can be found here

There's a very nice Record table saw...quite chunky beast and a very nice Multico morticer.

If I'd have known earlier I might have taken a trip, Apple, Rosewood, loads of Oak. It's a bankers bet that there'll be some worthwhile boards somewhere amongst them.

And the sales that occur this time of year don't get the crowds as the prime sale in January does. Ergo - cheap prices.

There's a super Record large planer/thicknesser as well.

I had a wander round yesterday and there really are some nice machines there. You can bid for them online. They're towards the end of the lots. I rather like the treadle guillotine.

I haven't got enough time to make the timber auction which is a shame but will keep an eye on future auctions.

I have a few things being watched from the the tool auction. I'd like to have had a closer look at the record planer/thicknesser and table saw but won't gamble on the from afar.

How do they get through so many lots of timber in one hour? Must be fast and furious. Would have fancied coming as am not particularly busy today, but sadly missed this thread yesterday.

Terry.

Come on guys. I talked myself out of going last night on the basis that I don't really need any more timber and it's a an hour and half each way to travel. I was OK until Custard starting talking about apple & rosewood so can we please not mention all the things I'm missing.

I presume you have to turn up to collect if you bid online, or can you pay to have smaller items sent to you? Online bidding not a lot of help if you have to go there anyway.

EDIT: answering my own question, £3 online bidding charge plus "flat fee" of £18 to ship - I put flat fee in quotes as they seem to suggest if the cost is more than £18 you need to get a courier. Seems a bid steep to me, but I guess it is just hassle for them.

I wouldn't bid online for timber, a high percentage of it inevitably will be fencepost quality. But with enough lots the odds are there'll be some real gems too. As always, you have to handle the boards in person in order to make that call.

They don't do online bidding for timber, only the machinery and other 'stuff' - probably too much risk on both sides as you suggest. I wouldn't buy anything important based on the single picture, but I did fancy lot 429 if it was going for a song, would have been handy to lug stuff around the garden, etc.

Main thing is I am annoyed I missed Roger's post yesterday as I would have gone.

Yeah that shipping fee put me off. I could make it to Ledbury if I left now but the timber selection was what interested me the most with the tools more a temptation!

Think I'll console myself by going through another box of junk from my Dad's shed, I have been storing it for twenty years since he died. Just about ready to throw it away. I did find a nice Stanley breast drill yesterday, so worth sorting through it.

It certainly is fast and furious. They usually get through 100 or more lots an hour. Bear in mind that some of the wood lots will only go for maybe £15 or so and it doesn't take long to get there. Nicer boards plus two or more keen bidders will make that lot take a little bit longer. And often you will get one or more adjacent lots for the same timber and so the auctioneer will offer both lots, say, to the winning bidder of the first lot.

Have to say it's a cracking day out - even for the whole family as there are lots of shops and cafes in Ledbury and an indoor swimming pool. Good pubs as well.

The BIG sale though is the one in January and is the best one to sell stuff at.
