I think this a very good point - to work using the fibres in the optimum way to impart strength to a joint or structure.

Our forbears intuitively knew this - in boat building and wood frame buildings where the use of naturally bent or curved wood which followed the grain was clearly preferably to joints where they carried a serious load.

The over exploitation of a natural resource (mature woods) and development of glues has meant that laminated components have now largely replaced the traditional in most applications.
