Preparation for Osmo Oil

Probably a daft question, but...

The Osmo Hard Wax Oil tin says to prepare by sanding to ~180 grit (as I recall). Is this necessary to give a "key" for the finish, as with varnish or paint, or does it just mean to get the surface smooth? I ask because I have a beautifully smooth planed surface and wonder if it is necessary to sand - just seems a shame, that's all.

I think this is just about smoothing the surface. If you have a really good surface straight off the plane, then I wouldn't bother, but I would just examine it using a raking light source across the surface to check that it was as good as I thought it was.

Thank you. Good point about checking the surface. I might also wipe it over with white spirit to help show any defects.
