I’ve not turned anything for way to long so thought I’d dust the lathe down & try some texturing as it’s something I like to see but haven’t really tried.
Oak with the smooth parts finished with sanding sealer & wax, the textured sides finished with oil.

Fresh off the lathe this afternoon, an Oak platter/tray. At least that's what I thought it would be, but my wife has since informed me that she's going to put fruit on it. 
I had one piece of Oak just large enough, starting out at 14" x 16" x 1" thick, but one end had a large crack in it and was cut off. It's finished up at 13 3/4" across.

This is a shout out for the much loathed Leylandii. The wood is wonderful for newbies and old Turners alike. It has an interesting grain pattern, is resistant to cracking, is readily available from those felling large trees, usually ends up at the local recycling centre and some varieties are heavily fragranced.
I'd a particularly large piece of Leylandii hanging around for a couple of years and finally decided to turn it into something. The piece was from the base of the tree, and like many Leylandii had numerous trunk shoots, which eventually merged together. Most times the trunks morph into a single piece of wood without voids or inclusions, as was the case with my piece, although I still did not know what shape it would take until I had removed a lot of wood.
After using the chainsaw to trim the obvious appendages I mounted the piece of a 6" face plate with 8 screws and the tailstock making sure it was not going anywhere.
When you turn pieces this shape, the first 30 minutes i find are very very uncomfortable, as you are turning air for the majority of the time. But..... with low RPM, a sturdy roughing gauge set at a very steep angle down from the tool rest ....and patience will eventually bring the piece into round. Once round I cut a large tenon to accept my Nova chuck. IT was then a case of hogging out the centre of the bowl. I could see a significantly large piece of 'punky wood' on one of the rims, which would have meant decreasing the bowl depth. I thus opted for a discus-shape, which meant the bowl shape would have its sides curved over, but i retained a good bowl depth. After hogging out the centre , my rough turning was complete. Because the log had been hanging around for 2 + years the centre of the bowl was relatively dry, only approx 14%, so it would not need long (2 days estimate) in the Beko Freezer (AKA wood kiln).

One from this afternoon, an Oak bowl from a tatty looking crotch piece.
It's still a little bit wet, so there might be a bit of warping as it dries. It's finished with mineral oil, my wife will likely use it to hold bread dough as it proves.

It looks like it's a piece of natural edge rather than something he cut in, probably from the crotch area of the log he used.

There was a patch of soft wood that I'd planned on putting some CA glue on to keep it in place. As I looked closer, I could see that it was about to come away, so I pulled it out and it left a void.

Hi Andy, good idea. What you could have done or even still do, possibly, is to turn it into a Yarn Bowl. You don't have to remount it, just some fine Fret saw/Dremel work.

Thanks, maybe a future project.
This bowl was requested for my wife's bread making, it's a no knead recipe that she'd found on Youtube. The bread takes a total of 3 hours from start to finish, with only 10 minutes of human effort. Here's the first loaf made using the bowl for the rising part.

I have but one question.
How are you managing to work in the current weather?
I went in my workshop 3 weeks ago, and, due to the cold, lasted 30 minutes before retreating to my warm house!!!!

Missus brought an electric oil radiator for the work shop which is able to keep the temperatures between 5 and 8 degrees on them cold cloudy days and the roof has three large clear plastic panels staggered for natural light but also helps heat up the place like a glass house on a sunny days. However twice this year I've said sod this and gone back in the house because of the cold.
