please recommend me a cheap 6" sharpening wheel.

can anyone advise or point me in the right direction please for a cheap as possible sharpening wheel for an old 6" bench grinder that i have.

i know this is not an ideal system at all, especially bearing in mind i'm going to have to sharpen freehand as i have no jigs, but i can't find a used sorby pro edge and now need a 'get me by' sharpening solution for my chisels for the next few months until christmas is well out the way and i can look to buy a new one.

What make is this grinder? The centres vary in size and a 1" thick wheel should still fit most grinders.
A 60 grit is good enough to grind material away without burning, or getting the fingers hot!
Machine mart have a selection, but you will find it difficult grinding wider chisels or irons on a stone less than 1" wide.
There don't seem many about.

A 6" grey grinding wheel to fit the standard 1/2" shaft grinder is £5.99 from Machine Mart.

The hardest part is making a jig for your spindle & bowl gouges that allow the handle to swing as well as rotate. Gouges with a straight across grind, like the spindle roughing gouge, are just rolled on a flat rest.

You can start with a base for the grinder which allows the grinding of most tools the main exception being scrapers.

You can also hone a hollow ground tool several times before it requires regrinding, ie, rubbing a slip stone or diamond hone across the hollow, a flat is produced at the heel & tip.

the "toolrest" i have is just a board fixed vertical to the edge of a bench with the grinder at the edge of the bench. (that make sense?)

I like the O'Donnell ruby wheel for good performance sharpening turning tools http://www.toolpost.co.uk/pages/Grindin ... heels.html Toolpost can also supply any necessary adaptors too. It'll make any old grinder perform really well

Don't get hung up on jig envy. You can make your your own jigs from scraps easily enough, see below. The angled one is fine for most gouges and the flat one is for scrapers. They're quick and easy to swap over and make grinding fast and repeatable.

Worth remembering that whilst the Sorby Pro Edge is a wonderful bit of kit, the majority of turners don't have one and manage just fine without. IF you're constrained by budget there are other more beneficial accessories to get first.

thanks for all the comments. i've now got a wide wheel coming from axminster, under a tenner with post, that should, by my measuring, fit my grinder and get me going.

not sure what do do about suitable jigs now, whether to try the diy route or look for a used one.

All I use to sharpen my tools is this set up and a diamond credit card.
