Have any of you chaps used a router for planing.?
At the present time I am trying to plane a 2X2 inch 2 foot long piece of wood into a cylinder in a Legacy lathe, I could make a box cradle that would perform the same result, However what sort of cutter would you recommend,? At present I am using a 1 1/2 dia, rebate cutter. and not getting much joy, although I take very shallow cuts.
The piece of wood is rotating at a very low speed but it still leaves spiral marks once it get to the cylinder stage
Thanks

I've never tried this but I seem to recall someone saying you get a cleaner cut if you reverse the lathe?

Take that with a pinch of salt as I am not sure if it's right or is safe.

why wouldnt you just turn it on the lathe? i am no master turner, but I could turn this!

To speed the job up, you could use a table saw or bandsaw to make the blank octagonal.

I am just about capable of turning it on my normal lathe as I am sure you know. I have owned a large number of lathes (at least 20 ) Metal working ones, such as Dean Smith And Grace, A German VDF, a couple of Colchesters etc.etc
The only one I have now is a Toolroom lathe that is very accurate called Smart And Brown
But my two questions were as follows:- Have any of you chaps used a router for planing.?
However what sort of cutter would you recommend,?
I am trying to make sets of skittles 9 per set. So if I can get the Legacy to do it in batches of three without moving the planed spindle from the lathe it can then carry on with following the template.
If any kind soul has a cutter to sell, or knows what I am talking about, I am all ears.
I see no one has asked what a Legacy lathe is, or indeed which model.
and thanks for the responses
and Marcros I will try to send you a picture by email, It made me laugh and hope you see the funny side of it
Regards
