im still not sure whether to get a #5 or a #4.5, since i will only have one bench plane :shock:

#5 would probably be the best choice for all around, is it possible to get good results squaring up edges with a smoother :lol:
 
i guess that depends on practice not the plane.

you could always buy one of the veritas joiner plates that
fixes on the side and holds the plane square to a surface.

Sorry for the late reply-been working away this week. I reckon you're better going with the #5 (or 5.5!!) You can get the same degree of finish as the smoother (after all,the bench planes are all built to the same high standard).
As you say, get a second iron and you can use you plane as "two" different planes by altering the mouth setting/iron.
