Hi all - do any of you know where I might be able to get a set of 24" planer blades sent for sharpening? Preferably somewhere close to Bristol area.

Its not local to you but dolphin tooling are reasonbly cheap and probably do a mail service

Leitz Tooling on an estate facing the New Cut, just round the bend from the dogs' home.*

I know that sounds like a music hall song, but they're nice people and have a quick turnaround. They do my circular blades, and the prices are reasonable. Morally certain they do planer knives too.

If not them then SWEMCO in Brislington: specialists in guillotine knives (ten feet long or more). They do the ones for my ancient printers guillotine, which are a mere two foot long. Their workshop is, frankly, terrifying, but they'll only let you look in from the doorway.

*If you come from the Temple Meads gyratory, along the Bath Road, turn left at the first bridge over the New Cut, left at the T jct. they're in the first estate on the left (quite small but plenty of parking). (edit) Ferry Steps Ind Est. off Albert Road. You can get there from the inner ring road easily too, over the new St. Philip's Causeway bridge then turn right at the Avonmeads roundabout.

TY Erik - I'll look into that - but now you've piqued my interest on SWEMCO's workshop!

A thought struck me after I posted -- they might shy away from planer knives. My guillotine is sharpened to about 20 degrees (from memory), so the sharpening angle is one issue. The other one might be the 'speed' of the steel - their main business is servicing the paper and packaging industries, where knives cut a bit more slowly and the material they cut is less resistant (generally speaking).

The say on their site that they do sharpen cartbide tooling though, so might be worth getting in contact with them anyway. My blades come back with big tags attached:

And by gum, they are! When they're sharp, my little hand-operated guillotine will easily do a 1" stack of 80g A4 (lengthways), as if nothing's there. They're very awkward to fit: at one point you're holding a naked 4" tall blade with the business side facing your toes... I keep the thing dismantled and the blades bolted into their plywood carriers (from SWEMCO too). Better now the kids are fledged, but even so it's a bit like having Samurai swords knocking about (only shorter & heavier).
