Would it take the weight ?

Very expensive if it fails in the night, even if its upto the job make sure you anchor it well to the wall. French cleat required methinks.

I think I'd rather have something custom built to fit each plane in it's own space.....

I did one for my brother in law's trains a few years ago. I bet you couldn't buy the toughened glass shelves for £60!
