Pallet wood makes good planters; as long as you get it from those marked HT.

Line the finished article with agricultural black plastic lining (any decent garden centre) and you're away. Punch a few hole in the bottom to allow some drainage of course - ideally in between the gaps you leave in the base timbers for that purpose. You can also treat the wood first prior to lining with plastic sheeting as above.

I had a couple made as above and they lasted years.
 
Planter made from decking, lined with a pond liner, holes drilled in the bottom and irrigation tubes hot glued to the liner, now in its second year and still looks as good as new.
