Today as I spun up a potential entry there was a loud bang like an explosion and the contender was in bits and I had a sore hand having stopped one half of the 40cm bowl with it. Pity as wife liked it as it was from the centre of a piece of horse chestnut I have been drying since Christmas. That is the key thing though it was from the plank out of the centre, the other two blanks are from the sides with no pith. But the pith supplied some very interesting figure. The wood was under such a stress that the two halves don't fit one another.

what a shame, that swelling looks very painful.

I remounted an oak platter today that had come off the lathe a couple of weeks ago. Its a worktop cutout, halfway through it , my mind went into self preservation mode. The edge was like a razor and would have done some serious damage to me if it had come off. What I call an ATM (bottom twitching moment) decided to keep the tail stock up and finish both the top and bottom centres off by hand. It just wasn't worth it.

I'll post some pics soon when I get time

I hope you heal quick!

I think what happened here is as the outside shrunk it pulled the two halve apart through the pith. These two edges no longer marry up as they are now both convex.

But thanks for the commiserations....
