I've been looking out for an old plane to renovate and maybe use occasionally.
So I've bought this just now. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361236352797? ... EBIDX%3AIT

I'ts cheap enough just to tidy up and look at, because it rather looks as if the bed is not flat,
on either of the side pics so I don't think it will be very usable.
Would any of you please be able to advise as to what back, or cap iron and screw I should be on the look out for?
And also how to go about cleaning it up.
TIA Regards Rodders

I'd start by stripping is completely then treating the metal parts with a bath ...

Refurbish the wooden bits or replace if too far gone but from what I can see they'll come up well with some attention.

You'll have to make a "back iron" from scratch or modify an old one from a junk plane.

Be a very worth while project. :)

Bargain! I guess it was cheap because of the visible mend, but it could be fun.
If I'd bought it I would not want to disturb the infills unless they were already loose. So I would not want to immerse it in water for derusting.
I'd try gentle abrasive on the surface rust. Have a look at the threads in the sticky at the top of the forum for some examples. Probably best to mask off the wood with tape first to avoid getting it any dirtier.
Then clean up the wood with reviver and apply renaissance wax or equivalent overall.

Don't forget to sharpen and use it!

Thanks for the replies, and the excellent renovation advice.
I expect it will be a right dogs dinner when it arrives.
I thought it will at least be a conversation piece in my workshop, as I do sometimes wonder how I would have managed to make a living and bring up a family using similar tools 100 years ago.
If I can get it cleaned up and working reasonably well, I'll be a happy Bunny
Thanks and regards Rodders
