Hey I'm new here so go easy on me.

I'm a site joiner but desperate for more bench experience so have been building my own house and shed to start doing a small bit of carpentry from.

Back on track got offered tools for my shed turned them down a year ago cause i didn't have the room well ends up I bought the same tools last night for a snippet of the price.

I haven't a clue what things are worth or if they are reliable.

All the tools were bought brand new in 2004.
Nova dvr3000 wood lathe with 2 extensions might be 3 not sure
Sip bobbin sander
Sip 10" 3hp table saw
Rexon dust extractor

New chisels n used ones for the lathe
Stack of mahogany n other timber for lathe

Been told he only turned 4 curtain poles and a pen.

What is the nova dvr3000 worth?
Is it a good lathe to start with?
Is it reliable?

Thanks
Gary

I have that model and they're pretty good. Certainly good enough for a beginner and I know of people who use them professionally.

No idea what the current 2nd hand price is but probably £500-£750 depending on wear. Current price new from the Record site for the new, improved model is about £2000 and the spare beds go for about £160

Hi, Gary:
The DVR uses optical sensors inside the headstock to sense and regulate the speed of the spindle. It is possible for the sensors to become coated with dust and not be able to sense the spindle speed. If that happens the rear cover on the headstock must be removed and a small metal cover plate opened to allow access to blow the dust off the sensors. If you do that make very sure the power is off and the lathe unplugged, because a slight slip when closing up the metal cover plate over the sensors can short them out and fry part of the main circuit board in the base of the lathe. Replacing the circuit board is a bit pricey and while the lathe will then work again, it may not have as much torque as it did before. At least, mine never did and I believe Duncan had the same problem.

It is an excellent, powerful, smooth running lathe. I ran mine for 5 years before I tried cleaning those sensors and messed it up. You only need to clean them if you get an error message on the digital display. I believe it is something like "RPT Error" and the lathe won't run.

Take care
Bob
