+ another 1 for Oldtools. I've only bought a couple of saws from them, plus a very few other bits, but they arrived superbly packed in quick time. They also do an e-mail update of new stock from time to time too, though I've resisted temptation so far.

Yep I bought a compass plane from them either last year or the beginning of this year. Good site but like all on-line second hand sellers, you do need to watch their prices.

For example, currently they have a used Lie Nielsen no 5 1/2 for £350. You can buy them new from Axminster (for example) for £289.

And surprisingly Axminster has the 5 1/2 in stock!

I've had various bits and bobs through from them, including my massive wooden 30" jointer. Prices are reasonable for the most part, service is also very good.

I also used their sister site tool-nut for some new saw files recently, and they were similarly excellent.

I believe that's the site that has tons of good stuff but doesn't ship to the US. It's easier to find good vintage carving tools in the UK, it's a bummer we can't get them shipped over here a lot of the time.

And another bummer that royal mail gives us such a screwing when something is shipped from the UK to here.

D_W, I feel your pain. If it's any consolation, we get quite a good screwing ordering stuff from the US into the UK, as my bank balance can testify. I've helped pay for a few HM Custom and Excise Christmas parties over the years.

It's the first thing I do when filtering an eBay search - "nearest first" - as to avoid disappointment when I find a nice plane and it's a US seller. I try to source US made vintage Stanley planes when I can (the quality of Stanley UK planes is debate that's been hammered to death), however, some of the best deals are sitting in workshops and homes in the US. Some planes are beautiful examples, but the p&p and customs tax can regularly run into more than the plane is worth.

Like I said, I feel your pain.

You're right about the shipping, it cuts both ways. We don't have a lot of great options here for anything heavier than first class and going international, and i forgot about the fact that you can get nailed on customs/VAT at the same time (something we don't contend with).

It's relatively uncommon for someone to do as a couple of the tool sellers, though, which is to exclude the US entirely. Perhaps that's entirely related to shipping rates. There are some things that just aren't over here in great quantity, like carving tools and good paring chisels (though even the latter seems to be the object of everyones' affection lately).

D-W, that's really interesting. I wouldn't have thought that would be the case.

I am surprised that secondhand tool shops don't ship to the US - it's possibly the cost of getting things off this island right enough. Although, they could put that cost on the "willing" customer like some US tool traders I've bought from.
