Hi
New on here. Have just started turning. I bought a small lathe of ebay and have just set it up , I have purchased a starter pack of blanks and was surprised how much I got in it for the price of £20
I have today made a candle stick holder and also a small bowl.. and sold my candle stick holder for £6 to my neighbour.. I have wasted a few bits of wood but i think that was expected...

I think i,m getting the bug. happy days

I never had much of a business brain, have given away pieces but never sold any, Perhaps they were not so marketable as yours. Don't fret about wasting wood. you might not have a piece to show but I am sure it taught you something.
I started off on some "unfriendly" wood and one way or another ran into a few problems. They are there to overcome and you will find it all gets easier as time passes. Good luck with the turning, I hankered after lathe of my own since my schooldays and only now got one.

Hi Welcome aboard, I'm something of a new start on here as well but have had a long lasting affair with my lathe! You have done well if someone was impressed enough to want to buy such an early piece. As you learn and build confidence if you can make some money to put towards the next batch of wood that you will have to buy. You also find that you will seek out all chances to acquire wood for free. This may lead to seeking permission to raid neighbours skips, or standing nearby when you hear that someone is removing an old fireplace or mantle! enjoy yourself and post some pictures of your achievements.

Welcome you find lots of help here and ideas, I only started last year, had a few flying objects, made lots of sawdust bat had lots of fun.

oh the saw dust... ive just got to learn to shake myself off before coming in the house... :)

thanks for all your comments I will post some pictures soon ,,

you all seem like a nice bunch on here

Welcome, Make sure you get a good mask for the dust and a full face protective mask. Its great fun turning but trips to the hospital are not so much fun.
The people on this site are extremely helpful and the advice will put you on the right track I am sure

Hi Pat
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on "catching" the turning virus! Please do post your pics up and one more suggestion would be to look up your local turning club and join. Great resource to connect you with all that experience at the start.
