With the "New Yankee Workshop" now appearing on Quest (the Discovery-lite channel on freeview) I can finally
watch the legendary Norm Abram (the antithesis of Roy Underhill)

Wow - I can see why so many people find him inspiring. Every thing looks so easy!

Wow - I can see why so many people hate his program - the editing hides anything that is difficult or time consuming!

Those Fifty odd episodes just seemed to whizz by.

I wonder if they'll show any more? I hope so.

I get a good deal of PBS from the states here and miss uncle Norman a lot. The new power tool guy is one Thomas Macdonald I believe. Tommy Mac is the way he comes across. His work is very pretty as his website points out , but I can't get on with his almost giddy presentation style or his "when it's done it will look like this" methods. It reminds me of a cooking show where raw materials are shown and a finished pastry pops magically from the oven. Roy (Underhill) is funny in such a down home way that it is hard to fault. Tommy seems more like a frat boy pushing around plebes when he has guests. I don't think he is being mean , just keep expecting him to snap a wet towel at someone.

In my recent thread about Norm https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums...british-tradesmen-from-norm-abram-t71906.html There's a link to a video of a presentation he did where he fielded all sorts of questions, mainly about This Old House, but a few were about New Yankee Workshop. He was asked if he made any bloopers. He admitted to plenty. He also said that he had a plywood unfinished staircase in his home for 15 years....there's hope for us yet!
