Does anybody know what a Febson patented test indicator was (is) used for.?

So it’s for determining how flat a surface is?

just showing the results of a google search, but reading the blurb I'd say you push in the centre and it tells you how deep a dip is, I imagine for metal engineering. not quite sure how it does internal and external measurements though
 
looks like a simplified dial test indicator with only a bit of dial
