Hi everyone,

I have started a sponsored swim for Diabetes UK. The challenge is to swim the English Channel equivalent in the local pool and runs from 22 February (today) through to 22 May.

I am not a fast swimmer but even for me this would not be too much of a challenge so I have set myself the target of finishing it in one month instead of three. I started today and managed 90 lengths in 90 minutes which is a distance best for me so quite pleased with that.

My aim is to raise £500+ so obviously, I am looking for sponsorship. If anyone would like to help this very worthwhile cause, I have set up a 'JustGiving' webpage. Alternatively you can text the code BBMH66 followed by your donation amount to 70070.

To the site admins. I hope this thread is okay, but if I am breaking any rules I will understand.

To anyone who would like to help, please accept my sincere thanks for your generosity.

regards

Brian

Well done! How many miles equivalent will that be?
I'll certainly pop on a few quid when you've done, keep us posted!
When you've finished, How are you getting back?

How many miles is the English Channel ... :?
(sorry  )

I should have mentioned, yes it's 22 miles. The challenge is called Swimm22 and they do it every year but this is the first time I've done it.

I did another 66 lengths this morning but in only an hour not 90 minutes so my average is getting better, just hope I can keep it up.

And no, I didn't start on the French side, but I will swim back. Diabetes UK have given us three months to complete it and if I do it in one month as I have set myself, I will have plenty of time to swim home again :)

Thanks to everyone for your interest, I will keep you posted on my progress.

regards

Brian

Swimming for a month? What about food, sleep, the toilet?
Oh, I'll be getting out now and again :)

Actually, I've had a couple of days off as I pushed myself a bit too much at the beginning of this week. I was back in the water this morning though and did 72 lengths in 75 minutes. Not my best but still good progress and it means I have completed 4.75 miles so far of the total of 22.

My fundraising currently stands at £197.00 of my £500.00 target which is about 39% so quite good. Obviously there is still some way to go and if you haven’t yet had a chance to donate to this worthy cause, there is still time. For those that have donated so far, please accept my thanks, your support is really appreciated.

Time for an update methinks.

I am now past the three quarter mark (in fact it is almost 18 miles). This morning was my best swim ever completing 104 lengths in 90 minutes so I am well pleased with that. My aim to complete the challenge in one month instead of three is well on target and I expect to complete the 22 miles before the end of this week.

Thanks for checking in and for your donations so far.

regards

Brian

Thanks for the update, It's very good of you to take it on, but I do hear that swimming is a good exercise,
Far better Than to suddenly take up running, You may not hear me but I'm cheering you on from the finish line, or is it the Finish shore? Rodders

Thanks Rodders,

I hear you loud and clear :) With just two miles to go I'll soon be there, hopefully Friday.

You are right about good exercise. While fully supporting you during exercise, you also get to exercise just about all the body. I struggle with iffy knees and there's no way I could walk the distances I'm swimming, despite wanting to.

Bonjour de France

It's now 18th March, just under four weeks since I started this challenge and today I romped over the finish line with a leisurely 70 lengths.

Just got to get back home now :)
