So I picked up a box of old saw parts from ebay a few months ago and after assembling one complete backsaw I didn't go back to it.

Last week I picked out a small saw plate and brass back and decided to make a handle for it, now unfortunately I had to choose between making some form of ply or using what I had about so it's made of Poplar with a little bit of something else laminated onto the bottom. Given the choice of wood the handle has been made slightly oversize but it feels nice in the hand and it's solid enough for a prototype lets call it.

I already picked out the best three fasteners from the saw nuts I had and the rest were junk so I've decided to use some brass corby fasteners I had from knife making the only question I have is should I throw some epoxy in after I've got it adjusted nicely after all I don't intend to have to take it apart again.

Well the results were messy, Corby fasteners rely on a step which poplar isn't strong enough to hold properly, rather than put glue in it and make this mess permanent I'm going to leave it screwed up for now and maybe glue a little veneer over the bolts.

However unpretty the saw is sturdy, feels good in the hand and is reasonably well balanced. As a first attempt I'm not too disappointed with how it came out and it'll do until I can get my hands on some better handle wood. I'm happy with the saw it does what I need it to do well. Hopefully get some pictures up tonight to share my disgraceful efforts with you all.

Not much wrong with that.
I've got a pile of dismantled old saws as well, all waiting for time and inclination at the moment. Did the vinegar bit on the blades which worked well, not sure about the sharpening aspect of it, hence the temporary halt in proceedings.
Thank heavens B&Q have loads of ready to use ones.
