want a quote for works

Steve

I was in a similar quandary last year - find a builder for a large porch and some other building work.

I decided to pay a visit to the local proper builders merchant. They supply a large part of the local building trade so should know who does a good job for a sensible price.

Simply asked the manager for a few names of those he thought would be suitable given the size and nature of the work - I did not want somebody whose forte was really painting and decorating, nor one whose main business was new house builds and major refurbishments. Initially he was slightly reluctant in case it compromised his relationship with his customers, but I did get a couple of names and was not disappointed by the outcome.

Good luck

I would agree doing this is a good idea - having been on the other side of the counter for many years the "proper" builders merchants will have a pretty good grasp of the local tradesmen and what they do - largely because when they meet in a place like that - they often start gabbling about what job they are on, problems or other such stuff; builders love to whinge about a job, but you can learn a great deal about the person from it. (a nice "finders fee" handshake wouldn't go amiss either!)
