Logo identification please. I really should know it but my memory is not what it was

No problem - I think you can be excused for not knowing that one! I didn't, but the web browser filled in 'Dolphin' for me in the search box on Wolfgang Jordan's excellent tri-lingual database, so I must have looked it up in the same place some time before.

Indeed, thank you Andy :)

The strange thing is I'm sure I've seen another very, very similar logo/trademark on some other tool I have here somewhere. Snag is it could be in any of a dozen or so boxes .... or it may not be here at all  #-o I'll keep looking.

Nice tool too. One of those easily-overlooked things which must have been standardised a century or two ago. Interesting that the standardisation extended internationally as well. They are still available of course, though the quality may have deteriorated somewhat - this is Axminster's current offering:

I know which one I would prefer!

Often it has struck me that these hand vices are exact miniatures of blacksmiths' leg vices (without the leg). Roger's appears to have a blacksmith cut thread too.

The leg vice appeared around 1600 - 1610.
