Laurel ?

Just had a Laure tree taken down - Spanish Laurel I think, anyway arboricultural vermin......but started chaining it up for firewood and found this....

and on it's companion piece:

never seen this on any wood before - shall of course be saving some, but it looks very bland - anyone any experience of it?

Laurel does tend to bland, but as a plus it can sometimes take quite a bit of detail - not a box sub by any means!

My experience of Laurel has been that it takes a beautiful finish. I sand to 500, seal, sand 500 again and use paste wax.
