hi chaps, currently refitting my workshop with a few bits, though not essential a Oscillating spindle sander would make my working day a bit easier & certainly make sanding the insides of wooden tubes we make... a lot quicker.

been looking round at options, there does not seem to be many variations available, the only one that keeps cropping up on google searches is the Jet JOVS 10 anyone know of a similar sized alternative without upping the price?

the jet looks OK, its actually slightly too small on its bobbin height, but I'm sure i could get a work around by fabricating something.

If you really need something larger than the Jet,try a search for a Philipson or Wadkin. The Wadkin may well only be available as a disc and bobbin combination machine,Philipson made a standalone bobbin machine.Be aware that you are getting into patternmaking territory and prices may reflect this.

thanks mate, could do with something slightly taller as my work is sometimes 20" high, but would probably manufacture a custom bobbin to suit, the big disc sander is something i would notes as i have a 24" flat disc sander made from a potato rumbler... looks like the jet is winning.

tools suitable for drum making are not easy to find.

I think the Newcastle branch of Axminster tools had an ex display model of the floor standing jet oscillating bobbin sander on for £850 when I was in at the weekend looked brand new.

a 20 inch high work piece would need something like 24 inches of shaft which sounds like a risky business, sideways torque on that length would be very big indeed.

I'm not looking at doing the whole piece with the one long bobbin, would be looking to do approx 10", flipping the piece & doing the other side. so need approx 12" bobbin hence my intention to fabricate one if i have to, have used the jet on at a colleagues workshop, it does fine job but falls slightly short of being able to do the longest tubes even with flipping.

ohh, thanks i will try getting hold of them...

dont suppose the tube will lend itself to being cut in two for a sanding, then glued back again?

not really... for both structural, cosmetic & acoustic reasons.... going to spend some time with the Jet and see about to to fabricate a slightly taller bobbin.
