Large (ish) hollow form

So, the new year project!

Piece of freshly felled fir from a friend's house. Pretty much as big as I can handle / lift really. (12" rule in one pic, lathe vicmarc 300 so no small twig!).

Will post as I get on.

So, end of Friday. Turned to rough shape and hollowed.

Buried in pile of shavings overnight hoping it doesn't crack. Tomorrow is refine shape, and out with the colours!

Pics show key steps, cleanup (with supervision from jr), and of course tools / lathe cleaned and oiled and everything was sopping at some point.

Strange that I have one of those that follows me around with a vac cleaning up he totally enjoys himself in the shed. Before some one says anything I never run any machine while he is in there

Depends on age / temperament etc I suppose but I regularly work with my lad in the workshop. He's just 5 and doesn't like the noisy machines but is quite happy to sit at the bench sanding or painting while I turn. Also quite confident using scroll saw and very small (2") disc sander. We have just two rules, never use any power or cutting tool (incl saw or knife) if I leave the workshop, and if something isn't going as we discussed it should, then stop at once and ask.

I would always respect anyone's right to make their own decisions of course, but I know my lad loves being in workshop and making his projects without too much help. This was his project today (likes flintstones at moment so this is supposed to be Fred's car).

So, rough turning complete.

Now to wait a couple of weeks at least to get it surface dry enough to finish / sand / colour.

The joy of wet turning the water spray and the drying afterwards. But the turning is a dream nice long ribbons which if not careful can become hypnotic and you forget how deep you have gone :twisted:

Great, when Lewis was 3 and a bit we got him one of these. They are not bad to make balsa projects and are a great intro to woodworking.

Glad that others have Sons Grandsons in interested in wood - My grandson is now 3 and half and he loves to come and play! in the workshop with me, mostly using one the vacuums to tidy up after me (I have 4 can anybody beat that) - feel sorry for the nursery staff his vocabulary is very much engineering based he can spot and name most of what I have; gas bottles wielder compressor band-saw pillar drill lathe Henry etc. He not interested in the plastic tool set bought for him to play now hes seen the real stuff.
