I want to make a thickness sander or 3 as described in the Shopsmith book, PTWFE.

It's a 2.5" diameter shaft, 15" long with a V cut out along it's length and the V gets screwed back in to hold the sandpaper tight. It is used in lathe mode with the main table underneath.

The book calls for maple or birch but I can't source either at a reasonable price, especially for 2.5" or more square. I really don't fancy spending £50 or so on 3 shafts.

I do have a lot of 12mm Baltic Birch offcuts so, assuming it is SAFE to use a lamination in this way, I'll have a go. I'm a bit nervous of it dissembling while being spun on the lathe so want to be extra sure it's safe.

Questions:

1) Which is best, a) 30+ x 2.5" discs or b) 5+ x 15" long strips?

2) Best if I alternate the grain when gluing?

3) Is the regular woodworking glue ok or should I be using something else?

4) What grit size should I sand down to before gluing?
