I prefer real books you can do so much more with them from throwing them at a fly propping up your bed to selling them when finished they are also better on the eyes than a kindle always think of kinder eggs when people talk about the kindle

I find that my wife moans about me using her Kindle in the bath!

I got Kindle for my Samsung phone and use it all the time to download the free classics which I feel I should read before I die.

I've so far done Mr Polly and am currently reading Robinson Crusoe....what wonderful books! What annoys me about Kindle is I've yet to find a way of stopping the darn thing accessing my Amazon account to buy books even though I've tried to stop it doing so. Her indoors went a bit crazy when she first got it as a present and I'm a bit worried about the amount of books she's downloading "by accident" and then not even reading!

Does anyone know how you can do this in Amazon....I've looked everywhere!

This could end in divorce!

Her account was re-instated in October - explanation here:-

http://www.nrk.no/kultur-og-underholdning/1.8368487

in Norwegian, but Google Translate does a decent job. No explanation from Amazon as to why any of this happened though, which is shoddy, to say the least.

@jimi43 - buy the lady her own Kindle registered to her Amazon account and tell her to pay for her own books, lol!

I have had a Kindle for quite a while (2 years?). There are loads of free books that I would probably never have read were it not for the fact that they were free. Kindle are also now doing a book each day for 99p; the offer lasts for one day only.

I still have about 100 books on my Kindle waiting to be read. My only objection is the difficulty in backtracking as few pages to re-read a paragraph or two. This is much easier in a paper book. However, IMHO, thr ability to take loads of books on holiday so that you can read something that suits your mood, and, when you return to a book, to have it open at the page you last got to, is well worth it. I still read paper books as well, though.

Two ways - the easiest one is to turn off wifi - (click on Menu to do this; you'll also get slightly longer battery life)

or else (eg if you want to keep wifi on so you can download free stuff from Project Gutenberg etc) how about changing the password on your Amazon account (from a PC) but not making the change when the Kindle asks for the correct password, leaving it locked out?

I tried changing the password on Amazon and it still allows books to be bought...don't know why it should but it does!

I think this should prevent it but it seems not to. I think the whole thing is slightly sinister!

That does sound a bit creepy! I think I need to do some experiments.

Well they are called house flys :D

My mother (eighty mumble mumble) didn't like the idea of the kindle, saying she liked the feel and movement of books. However, she's haveing some problem with her eyes, and we loaned her a spare one we had.

Bang - text size adjustment means she's a convert. The interesting thing will be - will she revert after she's had her eye operation.

I use Kindle, but lately it's been when I have had to accompany SWIMBO to various hospital appointments.
I was aware of the fact the books weren't my 'property', but realising just what Amazon can do (As well as avoid tax), I think I have bought my last Kindle-book.

In fact I might have bought my last item from Amazon. 'Other on-line stores are available', as they say so often on the Beeb! :D

... but we don't really know the whole story - do we?

... do you have "one click buying" turned on? With it turned off it's not possible to buy "by accident"

They are not avoiding tax they're just playing the game according to our rules. So are ALL the big names Google, eBay, Starbucks etc. It's up to HMCE to get their act together.

Tried that...it's off...much to my displeasure at not having the convenience!

Really confused.

On my PC under My Account with Amazon...> Kindle....there should be a button which says "bar the darn thing!"

There isn't....and I think this is deliberate.

Hi Roger,

I know about the 'permitted' tax loopholes, And yes the Government should fix things. Having said that, I might have taken advantage myself had I been given the opportunity. Still, when a firm acts as God with its customers it's time to say bye-bye. 8)
