Joist timber ID

How do, im about to cut some stair stringers out of reclaimed joists from a local wood recycling project.

Bought two deliciously hefty 4.3 metre lengths of 9" x 3" which came out of a fancy college in south London. I have planed a small section and they arent pine, which I assumed they would be, but a hardwood, a mahogany-esque grain but sandy coloured.

anyone know what they used to use for joists back in't day and what it might be? sort of reluctant to cut them into stringers now in case they are on the CITES list or something but maybe im just being overly sentimental.

so i shouldnt be too precious. seems like an awful lot of decent wood for the money.

Defiantly not iroko, or meranti, doesn't look like sapele to me either, but I have only small amounts of it
It looks different to everything I have in my salvaged hardwood collection.
The closest thing I could pair that with is sipo, but I don't think its that either.
It looks lovely whatever it is with nice figure, and looks to be a bit soft though like meranti...
Maybe take another shot of the side grain?

It looks rather like some timber my old man had years ago, Gurjan, he said it was.
It seems to often be mixed up with Keruing & may be the same species, there is often considerable variation in colour from sandy to red depending on where its grown.

Its pretty lightweight and actually not really strong enough for what im doing with it now, i was hoping for old slow growth pine, the brown fuzz its grown over the decades (century+?) looked exactly the same as on other old reclaimed structural pine ive bought, is that something that happens to a lot of woods after that much time?
This feels like its got a lot less structure along the length. Gonna look nice though so Ill give it some extra support and stick with it.
