I'd try to buy and old one if I were you.

Can't go far wrong with a jack compared to other planes but even so, there are so many old good ones out there available for very little money it seems like a no - brainer. Stanley or Record.

Get thee to a bootsale! :)

It depends entirely on what duty you expect of it. If you're a site chippie and want a plane that won't break the bank if it gets damaged or pinched, normal Stanley. For bench work, Stanley Sweetheart have had some positive comments on here, so would be the better bet. If you don't mind doing a bit of cleaning and minor fettling, old Stanley or Record from a dealer, Ebay or bootsale. If you want something that works 'out of the box' (apart from honing the iron), Stanley Sweetheart again. If it's your only plane, and it needs to do roughing out and smoothing, Sweetheart or vintage. If it's a jack plane to compliment a set of existing planes, and expected to do roughing out only, normal Stanley would probably do.

Then, of course, there's personal preference....

No right answer, I reckon!

Well I just pressed the buy button for the sweetheart. Well it is my birthday next week plus it is new and shiny.
Thanks for the advice all.

Good call Mick. I usually buy old vintage, but after seeing an offer I couldn't refuse I purchased a Stanley 62 sweetheart and its fantastic. Chris Schwarz thinks its as good as any of the other premium planes, apart for a bit of cosmetics. I think its fantastic, a lovely well made plane for in my case £78.00. See my youtube vid review if like.

Also went for the NO4 too and that's just as good.

My son went this route via the same supplier for the #62, plus picked up one of Stanley's #4 SW's via EvilBay a little while before last Christmas and swears by both planes as both are now his go-to planes while at work. He had them delivered directly to the workshop, but I managed to give both a reasonable test drive when he brought them home one weekend - as we made his new workbench - and think they're well worth a lot more than the money paid.

A resounding recommendation for their Sweet Heart bench planes here. :)

I got the new Stanley 4. It cuts just as well as the LV LA smoother. It's not quite as well finished - the adjuster is a bit floppy, but it is a third of the price!

I thought you bought the LV for its high EP capability, for use on hardwoods prone to tear out.

The Stanley is a normal 45 degree BD plane.

"with a plane effective pitch is all"

No it isn't. With a Plane, sharpening is all. . . . . but let's not go there.

The bevels! The bevels!

I did. Surprised you remembered, I'd forgotten myself! Experiment. It's redundant and am selling it on. High EP angle perfectly possible on any plane, no need to spend a fortune!

But you'd expressed enthusiasm for back bevels BEFORE you bought the LV... ?
