Is this scroll saw a good one to start with?

Good question. They seem to have been be well made saws, but without adapters for pinless blades it's probably not much use, unless you don't need to do any internal cuts. It's single speed and also has a 'C-Frame' which, from what I've read, gives a more aggressive cut, so maybe not ideal for a beginner. I think it's overpriced too, for a long out of production saw.

Thanks Martin for your input, what would you suggest for me to get, seen so many but not sure what's best for me,
 
I have the clarke version of that saw. if it's cheap enough go for it.

I use mine with pinless blades and aximinster blade clamps. other than the clamps going south everytime you snap a blade (now sorted with some clever little pins) it's a good saw.

for 40 quid, yes, you'll be fine with it.
