Somewhere, I have seen a simple and presumably traditional alternative to a hinge. However, I cannot for the life of me remember where or what it was called. This is making googling most difficult! I assume that they would have originally been blacksmith made, and the ones that I have seen are suitable for small boxes. It is a hoop of metal with a long tail made from a single piece of wire, so looks like a lollypop. A hole is drilled to put the tail through and the excess is bent (cinched?). This is repeated in the other half of the box so the hinge works like a chain- shopping the lid from moving.

Any ideas anybody?

i would be prepared to bet that is where I saw them.

any idea what they are called- I cant watch the video at work.

Hi, Marcros

Just be warned that they don't last more than a couple of hundred years, all the chests at Haddon Hall have had there replaced at some point in time.

Pete

i really needed something that would last until at least 2500AD. not going to have time in 2200 to change them.
