hi
after my last mess around with these phones i have bought a second hand one from ebay, anyone know how to update the ios system..

it is the iphone3gs i have but cant load a fb app for some reason..

thanks guys, however i am trying to upload ios5 and i dont seem to have a software update button to press, bleeding typical..

Pretty sure you'll have to do it through iTunes - Over The Air OS updates only came in with iOS 5, so presumably you're on iOS 4.something..?

I think it's going to be one of those situations where you have to update to get the latest apps but in the process of doing so your phone gets slower because it's an older processor etc... I found my iphone 4 was getting slower.

Yep, you'll have to plug it into your computer and update the old way via iTunes. Once you have iOS 5 you can update over 'the cloud' otherwise known as wifi. Pretty handy I must say.

AAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGhhh how did i know it wouldn't do it right.... the bleeding thing has had an error and now my phone is locked, useless bleeding things..
now what..........

Disconnect the iPhone from your computer and do a hard reset - home and power buttons held down together until the apple logo appears on screen, then let it restart as normal. Then attach to iTunes and start again - if you get another error message then it might be best to do a restore, then update the OS from there. If that doesn't do it, you'll pronably have to put it into recovery mode as follows:-

1. Make sure the iPhone is off and unplugged from your computer.
2. Hold down the home button.
3. While holding down the home button plug the iPhone into your computer.
4. Continue to hold the home button until the Apple logo disappears and the iTunes logo appears.
5. Now you can let go of the home button.
6. iTunes will say it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

...and start again. Oh, and you did back the phone up before starting all this, didn't you??

My Mum (90 this year) uses hers just fine, too. It is unusual to have the kind of issues that need recovery mode - I've only had to do it once in many years and many, many iPhones. And yes, the once I had to do it was on the iPhone 3G that my Mum now uses...

Hi pete
i am just about to start this process, in 4. do you mean the itune logo will apppear on the phone or on the computer, and in 6. will itunes on the phone or the computer say it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

thank you

Hi. Sorry, slow to respond. As you probably discovered in #4 above it's in the phone, not you computer. And first backup to iCloud can take some time (as in several hours) depending on how much data you have to backup. Not sure how you cancel a backup that's in progress - never had to do it I'm afraid.

Sorry I can't be of more help; I'll have a google around and see what I can turn up...

Pet

You can backup to iTunes within your computer so no need to use iCloud which has a limited free storage amount.
