My first thoughts were pruning but can't see anyone making one with a brass back.

I have dim memories of saw handle style called "Turkish"; I also wonder wether that's
a user cut-down from a normal open handle, either due to preference, or because
the original handle broke, and needed smoothing down.

The only other similar handle I know is on the large lumber cutting "one man"
cross cut saw.

Thanks Andy, reminds me of that old joke.

How do you keep an idiot in suspense ?

It's high on my list of things to buy so will definitely order one this year.

BB,
Well it's certainly a delight to hold but feels wrong if that makes sense. Might be my big hands or just the lack of top spur.

Smallest split nuts I have ever seen, 1cm diameter.

If it was modified it was done a long time ago.

Ok, Mr P as you have promised... the man says it's an unusual style only seen on I Sorby backsaws of about 1900! It doesn't have a name and doesn't appear in any catalogue, he says.

(Pity I didn't spot that ebay item - I'd have paid more than that just for the oddity of the handle - but not much more.)

BB, the Turkish saw is sort of similar but different - and was a pullsaw - see p 703!
