One of those 'I don't need it, but want it' tools - They're traditionally used for a single cut in a particular kind of Japanese footwear, it's basically a plane with the feel of a chisel. The 'rails' aren't sharp and are merely depth stops. It's actually a lovely tool to use and again, whilst not needing it over other tools for certain jobs, I do find myself reaching for it more than expected. Fun fun fun...

When you say used in footwear, is it for wood or leather?

Previous poster has it! Yeah, it's for softwood, but I use it on hardwood a bunch.

Can see them at around 2 minutes in - They sometimes use enormous ones as you can see. Looks fun!
