Or a Record for that matter.

I know it's sharpened just like a hand-held card scraper, but I'm confused about the angle of the edge. Is the edge honed perpendicular to the face, just like a card scraper? Or is the edge honed at an angle relating to the bedding angle (for want of a better term)?

I seem to remember Paul Sellers recommending a 45° angle (using a honing guide! (hammer) ), but I get the impression from others that edge should be at 90°.

Thanks

Use a 45° angle then turn a hook on that with a burnisher.

If you aren't sure about turning the edge you can just hone at 45º in the ordinary way until there is a burr right across, but don't bother removing the burr. It'll then work quite well as a scraper.
If you do turn the edge it's easy to over do it so just one or two passes until you are sure of what you are doing. Any smooth bit of steel will do for a burnisher - screwdriver, 6" nail, whatever.

Fine Grinder (hand or powered) will put a burr on it. A little like folk who sharpen a card scraper with just the use of a file, not resorting to finer stones. It works. May not quite be the ultimate edge but it sure is quick.
Same idea here:

Here's a somewhat degraded-by-time web article on super-tuning the main tool.

The issue of the clamping plate not applying even pressure caused me grief with my Record scraper. Overdoing the blade adjustment screw seems to slightly banana the clamp plate, in which state it has two settings - no cut at all, or juddering across the workpiece taking big bites.. A quick bend back to straight, and normal operation is restored.

It's sharpened at 45 degrees, you can sharpen the the 2 opposite sides at the same time and then when one becomes dull flip the blade over in the holder.

And people complained that a double ended marking knife sounded dangerous!

I have put a bit of one of those plastic strips sold for binding papers together over the top edge of mine. They are also good as saw edge protectors.

I did exactly the same. I also use one on my drawknife - it was meant to be a temporary mesure, but it works so well - it was even exactly the right length - that it seems to have become permanent.

I always do it just the same as a standard hand scraper.
Flatten@90,polish and turn the edge.
Top and bottom.
That gives 4 ready edges for the use of
