Can you advise me how to make the cut in this drawing? I want to insert the piece of wood to the left, if the drawing makes enough sense to allow you to comment!

hand tools - saw down the lines and clean out with a chisel.

power tools- router (router table even better) rout a rebate and and square the end with a chisel.

if that is a finished joint it will have no strength to it and fail easily unless there is an added fixing.

Thanks! It doesn't need strength apart from to hold itself so that's not an issue. I don't have a router, but maybe I could use a drill bit and finish with a chisel?

EDIT (having re-read your suggestion) - you offered an either/ or reply, right? So your first answer is the one I need to work with.

Yes that's correct, use a marking gauge to strike a nice deep line to work to, then use a fine saw and slowly saw down the line, the more care you take sawing the less work with a chisel.

I'd make a knifewall and treat it like a mortice hole with a chisel, remove a bit at a time, go deeper and deeper until you are at depth, then pare down to your lines being careful not to split the wood if it's end grain.
