So I've started my next project which is a table/ display cabinet in American black walnut. The material I've got for the legs is quite a lot darker than the veneered MDF I'm using for the panels, can any one recommend something to make the panels darker, any particular stain/dye (never really worked out what is the difference?)

you could try just oiling it for starters- on a scrap.

If you needs to look at staining, there are numerous options, but van **** crystals would be a good starting point. I did some with a water based stain, then an oil over the top which looked good.

Yes it will get darker with oiling but so will the leg, some adjustment is needed I think. Never tried van **** crystals, are they easy to use?

i believe so. I used transtint in water, but once you have made a solution, the process should be the same. build it gradually, if you want it darker, put another layer on etc. test on scrap first!

The crystals are easy to use - to make it darker just use less water.
I make a very concentrated solution then dilute to give the desired look - testing on bits of scrap.

try washing soda crystals - dissolve in water, wash onto surface and dry off with kitchen towel. Use on scrap piece first!!
