It is an epidemic. I think the internet is full of spam and scam. On my business email account, with maximum filtering applied, I still get over 200 spam emails every day. We are at the point of using paid for filtering services to deal with the deluge.

I get around 400 or so emails every day (from groups, lists, forums, subscriptions etc and of course private mail) no more than a handful are spam.

Something must be wrong in your filtering.

No, the filtering is fine. We have a lot of business email addresses and because we promote products on-line and provide services on line we have a significant on-line presence across quite a few domains. Email address harvesters (mainly in the US it seems) grab and disseminate these widely. It is a serious internet problem. We have our main filtering applied by our leased lines supplier (so before it gets to our servers) and we get literally millions of spam emails filtered out annually at that level. Inevitably some get through. The next stage apart from ISP, leased line provider and exchange server plus software bolt ons. which we have now, is another active filtering system which is much mores sophisticated (but quite expensive). It is an issue for us as we must take quite a lot of steps to avoid malware and various attacks. This area is ripe for proper regulation! Very hard top deal with people operating from far off places though. Bollocks between two bricks seems appropriate treatment for them to me!

I've had a couple of quite genuine looking paypal scams. 1 of them I spent several minutes over, and then finally sent it to paypal phishing (without clicking any links on the scam page!)
Paypal came back a couple days later and agreed it was fake.

All an individual can do is to NEVER NEVER EVER click a link insiide an email telling you to.

I had this same message from Paypal but even though it is obviously spam, it was sent to an address which isn't registered with Paypal.

I keep getting emails from african ladies who have recently lost their husbands and intheir dying breath they told the wives to share his wealth with those less fortunate in the world....... one recently said all i had to do was send her my bank details and she would put $122 Million into my account! I thanked her and said " If you send me the money for a ticket to Africa I could come and collect the money in person as I had always wanted to visit Africa and could i take my wife to meet her " for some reason she didn't reply which is a real shame as Mrs Agnes Umbongo sounded such a lovely lady 9-)

Brian
If you give me your bank account details Brian I'll give you a share

I had a brilliant one at work (we sell expensive grey boxes for routing audio and video in various ways) from Sir Philip Green, the billionaire CEO of the Arcadia Group. He seemed very interested in getting hold of a few bits of kit for evaluation, but had accidentally used an email address registered to a Colombian university and got the address of his own head office wrong.

I s'pose he's a busy chap with a stressful job, but still. Attention to detail matters!
