I have been offered (to purchase) a used selection of these tools some are Henry Taylor Diamic, are these better or worse than Henry Taylor Hamlet Craft tool brand? The Craft ones are marked HSS --- the Diamic some are some aren't all have dark handles not light beech or whatever.

They work fine for me. I've been using HT Diamic framing chisels for about 20 years and had no reservations about using their turning tools.

Depending on what you do on a lathe, the HSS part may be almost essential for you.

I don't know of a way other than feel (on a grinding wheel or a stone) to get an idea regarding whether or not a tool is HSS (without intentionally overheating it to see for sure).

if you want to not use HSS, turning will be more large cuts at slower speed and more like hand working (it's nice to not have to do that on wood that isn't very cooperative).
