I thought this winter I'd concentrate on a bit of woodturning. I'm still at the novice stage only doing about three projects a year, so some advice on chucks from the experts would be very helpful.

My current set up is Axi lathe with Clubman K100 chuck, I have the face plates for the "c" jaws and one other. My question is about Screw Chucks and O'Donnell jaws. The Screw Chucks I kind of get for small work like spindles etc, but not sure what I can hold in the O'Donnell jaws, for example can they be used as gripper jaws? I guess one of the things I'm after is , what will hold square pieces.

As they say if you don't ask questions you'll never learn.

Regarding square spindles then the general means of driving them between centres is to use a four blade drive centre in the headstock or Chuck.
Dependent upon cross section then most four jaw Chuck accessory jaws will grip and drive stock with tailstock support if long and indeed short lengths of 100mm or so for turning knobs etc. Without support.
Screw chucks may not be very successful with spindle work as you are screwing into end grain.
I regularly use a screw Chuck adaptor for starting off a bowl and in association with hot glue sacrificial blocks to drive pieces that I don't want a central hole in.

If you are looking for flexible jaw set that can go down to holding dowels or even pen blanks then I should think the O'Donnell jaws would be an ideal addition.

Thanks for the helpful info, I'm now starting to get the picture.
Really love your idea of hot gluing Chas, I'll do the basics before I graduate.

As someone in the thread mentioned, a picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for posting the link, I now see the light.

I haven't considered any other chuck, I have a couple of Axi ones and all my add ons are compatible, also my thread is 1" x 8tpi.

I bought a set of O'Donnell jaws from Axminster, together with the two sets of inserts and I find them really great. I rarely remove the basic jaws because they are so useful. And the length of jaw keeps your paws away from the whirling chuck jaws. I bought the Evolution chuck which is also very nice.
