Hi all and thanks for looking. after asking some help re: air filtration systems, i started reading past threads on the forum on the subject of dust collection and doing some more long due research and - voila! now i´m even more confused than when i started! newbie stuff, i guess...

I have a Jet 10-20 drum sander and already have a dust collection system, but it´s a bit underpowered and just won´t filter particles small enough - Jet says i need at least 400 cfm (around 700 m3/hr IIRC) if i use an extractor just for the drum sander - and i would like to keep my lungs free of the small harmful dust particles. So i would like to rely on your experience to answer these two questions:

1- how low (small) should i go on particle filter size? 5 microns (maybe not)? 1 micron ? even less ? - problem is i´m yet to find a chip extractor/canister filter combo that will go beyond 1 micron...

2- what system should i buy? the shop vacs (i hope i got the name right - i´m talking about Festools and Numatics kind of thing) will let me go to particle size of 0.5 microns (!!!), but just don´t have the suction Jet recommends. chipextractors, OTOH, have plenty of suction, but don´t filter small enough...

My shop is closed (no place outside to put the dust extractor) and i have breathing problems (sinus and asthma), so this stuff scares me a bit and i would like to get the dust subject behind my back and do some actual woodworking stuff. i use a 3M mask and try to use my hand planes and scrapers the more i can, but still find myself needing to use the drum sander.
any help appreciated!
thanks in advance,
Miguel (from Portugal)

I would get a chip extractor, a good powerful one. Then a Cyclone or thein to take away the worst of the dust. Then finally a 1 micron filter cartridge.

Extractor:

1 micron filter:

Here is my setup, its a bit temporary at the moment with some tape holding parts together, but I'm going to buy the Record filter and fit it, will take a little bit of custom mounting but nothing more than a few MDF discs cut to the right size, I don't know of any cartridges that go lower than 1 micron. I'd couple the entire system with a air filter for the shop and you will be doing all you can to protect yourself.
