Help identifying and duplicating finish

Hi all,

I would like to identify and duplicate the finish shown in the photo below. It's a bit of a weird one, with the grain standing out in a lighter, almost chalky contrast to the matt grey/black finish. I'd be grateful if anyone can give me a clue how it is done.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve googled liming wax and it seems like it might work, if not done too heavily. Chalk wax also seems viable, following the YouTube links.
 
if you have a bit of scrap to play with, white emulsion might catch in the grain enough.
