Hi there.
I'm a total newbie to anything other than banging a bent nail into scrap wood. So I'll be likely to troll a lot.
However, as my dad was an engineer in the RAF who made his own tools it's starting to rub off.

I've just bought a Naerok WL-12037 lathe, a Mulitstar duplex chuck, a Variform screwchuck, a Tormek 2000, 10 mixed Sorby chisels & a couple of Marples. All for £200. Woodturning is fascinating, & watching the guys at the club I've started going to, I'm hooked.

I've also developed an interest on old tools, coz my dad did too.

I've a photography business, predominantly Wildlife, but I do everything that's sells. This has taken over the garage, so I've decided to partition because of the dust. It's a double but not a lot of space.
As my portfolio is strong, I now do only a little new work on the wildlife. This has given me some time to put to woodturning. I've built a wooden bench (see first sentence.....) & a set of shelves. So ready to go.

I acquired two lengths of seasoned oak yesterday, one of 5' x 2' x 3" & another of 8' cut down to 2 4' lengths. Wouldn't go in the car otherwise. This was a trade for some photos for a park.
Also I've a Blackthorn stump & a few bits of Yew, unseasoned. So down to work on those.

I'm a 56 year old, skint, with over 30 years Logistics management experience. A bit of wood turns me on.....

HELLO!!!!

What you doing tomorrow.

Hello by the way. As sharpening is top of the list I'm sure that one or two here will give you some great advice. 8-[
Last one out please turn the lights off

Hi Kreed, Welcome! I joined the Forum a couple of months ago and have found it invaluable. I see that the top of your learning list is sharpening. I found this to be one of the most difficult things to do and when using a standard grindstone I managed to botch up one or two chisels. I invested in a Tormek System and never looked back. Over a period of time I also purchased various rigs which in turn has made sharpening a simple operation. There are loads of videos on YouTube that explain how to use the system.

Regards

Vic

Thanks all. Yep, youtube is great for this stuff.
My view is good tools = good results. Im going to have a go this afternoon, hopefully I'll do better than when my sister cut my sideburns once. "too short this side, I'll take some off the other...."

Welcome to the forum Kreed. Pop by the hand tools ward and search sharpening. If you don't learn more than you ever wanted to , then you are probably needing stonger med's. The topic has been EXTENSIVELY covered. It is however a vastly amusing way to kill a week or two.
You are gonna love the inmates here, helpful , polite and generous to a fault . And no question is too daft for it not to stir good and thorough responses from very knowledgeable members (they put up with me after all).

hello kreed i too was a novice woodworker in fact if it did not work with a hammer and nails it did not get done i was in the RAF as well (mt) i have now retired and surprise myself on the things i can now make good luck with the wood-turning
