Has anyone fitted out a toolbox ?

Hi All,

It would appear that I've taken up metal working by mistake so I decided to invest £10 in this to keep all my metal bashing gear together.

Its a good size and will fit under my bench, including wheels H 74 x L 87 x D 18 cm

Thinking of making a noughts and crosses style interlocked shelving unit for the inside (maybe an extra support on the left and right) using pallet wood. Files and the like on the inside and the hacksaws can go in the lid.

Good idea / bad idea ?

Try to arrange things so that files are not stored higgledy-piggeldy on a shelf or in a drawer. There's no faster way of wearing files out than allowing them to bang against each other. A rack allowing them to hang with space between them is a much better way to store them if you can arrange it. Also, try to keep files for brass and files for steel seperate if you can - a file used on steel will be slow to cut brass, though not the other way round. Ideally, brand new files should see service on brass only until they don't cut freely, then relegated to steel on which they'll still cut perfectly well.

A wooden block with holes in is a handy way to store centre punches and pin punches; it keeps them visible and accessible, and protects sharp points from damage.

Yes that's my idea, all hanging down.

All my files are second hand and I was recently advised to bin/ sell the lot

I have just bought a big chunk of brass for lever caps so maybe now is the time to buy some decent ones and relegate everything to steel work.

My garage walls are the swiss cheese, breeze block variety and I have NEVER attempted to drill into them. Hence the box. Plus I'm hoping to move next year.
